VPL LAUNCHES PHEROMONE
MIST FOR EASING EQUINE ANXIETY
PHOENIX, Ariz. – (Oct.
2, 2003) Equine veterinarians attending the national conference
of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP),
November 21-25, will be the first to see and learn about Modipher
EQ™ Mist (Equine Appeasing Pheromone) from Veterinary
Products Laboratories (VPL). The product is for equine veterinarians
who wish to offer an alternative to owners looking for a natural,
safe and effective way to reduce stress and thereby modify
horse behavior caused by fear-based stress.
In mammals, lactating females
release substances referred to as “appeasing”
pheromones, the function of which is to calm and reassure
the offspring. Research has shown that horses recognize these
pheromones throughout life. These maternal pheromones can
be found on the skin in an area called the “wax area,”
close to the mammae of a mare that is suckling her foal. When
a horse inhales these calming pheromones, they settle on receptors
in the nasal cavity producing a reaction that calms the animal.
Modipher EQ is based on
a technology that has been available for years, and recommended
and used by certified behaviorists and veterinarians in Europe.
It is intended to be used as an aid in the management and
reduction of anxiety that may occur during the following stress-inducing
situations:
- Transportation (both loading and transport)
- Prevention of fearful situations* (including
separation anxiety, clipping, shoeing, etc.)
- New Environments (riding outdoors, new stable,
new place, new noises, crowds)
- Training (breaking foals, training for competition
or show, ground training)
- Social Situations (mare-foal separation,
loneliness, behavior with other horses, behavior with people,
such as the veterinarian, farrier or new owner)
- Modipher EQ is NOT a product active against
pain, a sedative, and does not increase the horse's performance.
